First-Time Dubai: Visa, Money, Where to Stay

Dubai is the easiest big-ticket destination for Nigerian first-time international travellers — the visa is handled online, the airline options are strong from Lagos and Abuja, and everything you'd want to do is a 30-minute taxi from a walkable district. Here's what you actually need to know before booking.

UAE tourist visa from Nigeria

Nigerian passport holders need a visa in advance. Emirates and Etihad process visas for their own passengers, and licensed travel agents in Nigeria (including us) can apply on your behalf through the GDRFA/ICP portals.

• 30-day single-entry visa — the standard choice for a first trip.
• 60-day single-entry visa — worth it if you're visiting family or want flexibility.
• Processing: 3–5 working days typically; occasionally longer during peak periods.
• Requirements: passport bio-data page, colour photograph, return ticket, hotel booking or host details.

Approval odds and refusals

The UAE has tightened Nigerian tourist visa approvals over the last few years. Single male applicants aged 20–40 with limited travel history get rejected more often. What helps: stable employment or business documentation, previous international travel, family travel, and applying via a recognised agent that has a track record.

Where to stay for a first trip

• Downtown / Business Bay — steps from Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and the fountains. Best for first-timers who want to walk everywhere in the evenings.
• Dubai Marina / JBR — beach, tram, marina walk, endless restaurants. Great for families and honeymooners.
• Deira / Bur Dubai — the old city, gold and spice souks, best for budget stays and a more traditional experience.
• Palm Jumeirah — resort island; taxi in and out. Pick this only if you're not planning much off-property.

Money — cash or card?

Card everywhere. Malls, restaurants, taxis, the metro top-ups, tour operators — cards work. Naira cards from Nigerian banks may hit low FX limits, so bring at least one card denominated in USD or funded via a dollar account. Small souks and independent tour touts sometimes prefer cash — bring around AED 500–1000 to start.

Airport ATMs at DXB dispense AED but at poor rates. Better rates are at the exchange houses in the malls (Al Ansari, Al Fardan). Skip street money-changers.

Getting around

• Metro — clean, air-conditioned, cheap. Buy a Nol Silver card at the station.
• Careem / Uber — reliable, tips included, safer than street taxis at night.
• Standard taxis — metered, reliable, but Fridays and rush hours mean long waits.
• Renting a car — worth it for Al Ain, Hatta or Abu Dhabi day trips; overkill for a city-only stay.

Dress and behaviour

Dubai is more relaxed than the rest of the UAE but still Muslim majority. Cover shoulders and knees in malls, mosques and government buildings. Beach and pool areas are fine for swimwear. Public displays of affection, drinking outside licensed venues, and photographing strangers (especially local women) are all offences. Ramadan brings stricter rules around eating in public during daylight — check dates if you're travelling in that month.

A tight 4-day itinerary

1. Day 1 — Burj Khalifa at sunset, Dubai Fountain show, dinner in Downtown.
2. Day 2 — Desert safari with dune bashing, camel ride and Bedouin dinner.
3. Day 3 — Old Dubai: Gold Souk, Spice Souk, abra (water taxi) across the creek, Al Fahidi historical district.
4. Day 4 — Palm Jumeirah, Atlantis Aquaventure or a Dubai Marina cruise; last-night shopping at Mall of the Emirates.

What to skip on a first trip

• Ski Dubai (fun, but eats a whole afternoon).
• Global Village (only worth it Oct–Apr).
• Long Abu Dhabi day trips if you only have four nights.
