Hajj & Umrah from Nigeria: Visas, Flights and What to Pack

Umrah can be performed any time of year; Hajj happens only in Dhul Hijjah. For Nigerian pilgrims, the two trips share most of the logistics — visa, flights, accommodation in Makkah and Madinah, and ground transport — but the paperwork differs sharply.

Umrah visa for Nigerians

Saudi Arabia issues Umrah visas through the Nusuk platform and the eVisa channel. Approved agents in Nigeria (Stamkay Logistics included) handle the application on your behalf. Requirements typically include:

• Passport with at least six months validity from date of entry.
• Recent passport photograph on white background.
• Meningococcal (ACYW) vaccination certificate — mandatory for pilgrims.
• Confirmed flight and accommodation.
• For female pilgrims, the mahram rule has been relaxed — women 18+ can travel without a mahram, but we still recommend group travel for first-time pilgrims.

Umrah windows

The Saudi government reserves parts of Dhul Hijjah for Hajj pilgrims only — Umrah visas are usually not issued for entry between late Dhul Qa'dah and mid-Muharram. Plan your Umrah for Ramadan, the "cool" months (November–February) or off-peak weeks in Rabi and Rajab for calmer haram experiences.

Hajj for Nigerian pilgrims

Hajj visas are quota-based and issued through the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and licensed private tour operators. Do not attempt to enter for Hajj on an Umrah or tourist visa — this is heavily enforced and can result in deportation and bans.

Nigerian Hajj packages usually include return flights (often on Air Peace, Max Air, Azman, Flynas or FlyAdeal), accommodation in Aziziyah or closer to the haram, meals, ground transport to Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat, and guide services.

Jeddah vs Madinah arrival

King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah (JED) is the traditional pilgrim gateway and closer to Makkah (~90 minutes by road). Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport, Madinah (MED) is smaller and calmer, but you'll cross to Makkah by road (~4 hours). Many first-time pilgrims prefer flying in through Madinah to visit the Prophet's Mosque first, then travelling to Makkah in ihram from Dhul Hulaifah (Bir Ali) — this is the classical order.

Entering ihram

Ihram is the sacred state pilgrims enter before the rites. Men wear two unstitched white cloths; women wear their normal modest clothing. You enter ihram at your miqat — for pilgrims flying from Nigeria, this is usually Yalamlam (aerial), Rabigh, or Dhul Hulaifah if coming from Madinah.

• Change into ihram before crossing the miqat, or during the flight if arriving directly into JED.
• Announce your intention (niyyah) and begin the talbiyah.
• Avoid perfumes, cutting hair or nails, and other prohibited acts until you complete the rites.

What to pack

• Two sets of ihram (men) or two abayas (women).
• Comfortable, easy-to-remove sandals — you'll walk a lot on marble.
• Unscented soap, toothpaste, deodorant — scented products are not allowed in ihram.
• Refillable water bottle, ORS sachets, and a small first-aid kit.
• A pouch or waistbag for passport, phone and Nusuk permit — pickpocketing does happen in busy areas.
• Prayer beads, small Qur'an, du'a book.

Common mistakes we help pilgrims avoid

1. Buying non-refundable flights before the Umrah visa is issued.
2. Booking hotels that look close on a map but are 20 minutes' walk from the haram.
3. Missing the meningococcal vaccine deadline — clinics need lead time for the certificate.
4. Skipping SIM/eSIM planning — Saudi data helps with Nusuk permits, ride-hailing and family updates.
