UK Visa from Nigeria: Documents, Fees & Timelines (2026)

The UK Standard Visitor visa is one of the most common applications we handle for Nigerian clients — tourism, family visits, short business meetings, private medical treatment and academic conferences all fit under it. The rules are strict, but the decision is almost always predictable if the paperwork is complete and honest.

Who can apply

You apply as a Standard Visitor when you plan to stay in the UK for up to six months for tourism, seeing family, short courses under 30 days, or business meetings (no paid work, no substantive employment). Longer stays, work, and study need a different route entirely.

Fees and processing time

• Short-term visitor (6 months): the visa fee is set by UKVI in GBP and is paid online — expect around £115 for a single-entry visa in 2026, with the exact amount confirmed at application.
• Long-term visitor (2, 5, 10 years): higher fees but same six-month-per-stay rule.
• Priority (about 5 working days) and Super Priority (next working day) services are available at extra cost, subject to slot availability in Abuja and Lagos.
• Standard decisions from Nigeria typically take 15 working days after biometrics.

Documents that actually help your case

UKVI officers make a single judgement: are you a genuine visitor who will leave the UK at the end of the trip? Every document should reinforce that. A complete pack usually contains:

• Passport valid for the full period of stay, with a blank page.
• Bank statements for the last 6 months, stamped, showing genuine transactions — not a big deposit two days before applying.
• Employment letter stating role, salary, length of service and approved leave dates. Business owners send CAC certificate, tax clearance and company bank statements.
• Proof of ties — property documents, family responsibilities, business ownership, ongoing school for children.
• Travel plan — a day-by-day itinerary, hotel bookings (refundable is fine), and inward and outward flight itineraries. Do not buy non-refundable tickets before decision.
• Sponsor letter if a UK-based host is paying, plus their proof of status and finances.

Biometrics in Nigeria

Biometrics are captured by VFS Global on behalf of UKVI at their Abuja, Lagos, Kano and Port Harcourt centres. You'll need to:

1. Complete the online application and pay the fee.
2. Book a VFS appointment — slots for premium services fill quickly in peak season (June–September).
3. Attend in person with printed confirmation, passport, and your document pack.
4. Track the case online; the passport is returned to the centre or couriered, depending on the option you picked.

Common refusal reasons — and how to avoid them

• Recent large deposits that aren't explained. Add a bank letter or gift-letter with matching transfer evidence.
• Weak ties. First-time applicants with no property, no dependents and no long employment history should be extra thorough on business or family evidence.
• Inconsistent story. If your itinerary says London, Manchester and Edinburgh but bookings only cover Heathrow, tighten the plan.
• Deception on prior applications. Any misrepresentation, even in a Schengen application, can trigger a 10-year ban.
